Argument from Design

Argument from Design are extremely fortunate in that we are located in a particularly diverse region of the United Kingdom: the Yorkshire & Derbyshire region. Depending upon which direction one leaves Sheffield, there are rocky and rugged moors landscapes, rolling hills, the mountainous Pennines and of course several stately old homes and ruins like Chatsworth & Bolsover Castle—not to mention the beautiful gardens.

As Summer turns to Autumn, some ivy—the “Virginia Creeper”—turns from a luscious green to a hallucinatory red. It’s such a beautiful image that we’ve used our photos of the Virginia Creeper on the side of a pub in promotional work for the region.

As Autumn turns into Winter, the weather can become quite dramatic. Our image atop Mam Tor (from another piece of promotional imagery) shows a blast of frigid air blowing snow off a nearby peak. You can see two walkers just keeping their balance on the ridge.

Taken on the north-east peninsula of the Isle of Skye, these two photographs show just some of the beauty one can see there. The mainland (including the Highlands) can be seen in the distance.

We didn’t use a wind machine there, but this photo of a Highland Cow seems to dispute that. Highland cattle are just naturally fluffy. Remarkably gentle, quiet animals, these cows dot the northern Scottish countryside—not so much as do the sheep, but they are quite frequent enough.

Part of a job entailing the creation of VR panoramas for New College of Sarasota, Florida had Argument from Design photographing the beauty of the campus.

This photo of New College’s College Hall shows the raking light of an early January morning &is a study of the light, colour & architecture in Florida.

Part of virtually every student’s memories of the campus are the trees covered with Spanish Moss. Seen at nighttime or during the day, they can seem quite hallucinatory.

As Argument from Design work around the world on projects, we always carry our camera. We found many subjects in Spain’s Galicia, including the Cathedral of Santiago de Compostela at night, sculpture by Master Mateo, this staircase at Santo Domingo de Bonaval, in Santiago & this sculpture in Vigo, near Santiago.

Crete was equally rewarding. We spent some time in the city of Rethymnon working at the University. The city & bay is overlooked by the “Fortezza”. Rethymnon also contains some incredibly beautiful crumbling buildings & the lovely Renaissance “Rimondi Fountain”.
